The fundraising campaign, which was run by the British Poles website, ended over the weekend, with a total of 22,460 pounds donated by 1,005 people, both Polish and British citizens.

The money will cover the cost of installing an anti-burglary system in the home of the Stangryciuk couple, their planned trip to Poland and day-to-day needs.

Stangryciuk, who turned 100 in April, discovered that thousands of pounds in cash that he and his wife had saved for a trip to Poland, as well as his war medals were missing after he let three men posing as workers from a water company into his house.

Born in eastern Poland in 1922, Stangryciuk moved to Argentina with his family at the age of 12. While living there, he volunteered for the Polish armed forces.

In 1942, he arrived by ship to Belfast, where he joined the British Royal Air Force (RAF).

While training, he survived a plane crash, sustaining horrific wounds that left him in hospital for months.

Even though he underwent 20 operations to reconstruct his face, he took part in 18 air missions over Nazi Germany in 1944 and 1945.

He was the only Pole to have participated in the victory parade in London on June 8, 1946.
