His colleagues said Matul was "a legendary personality" and "an inseparable part" of the Polish public broadcaster's "grand and wonderful history."
Matul joined Polish Radio in the early 1970s, soon after earning a degree in Polish studies at the University of Warsaw.
Literature, especially poetry and drama, was the main focus of his professional interests.
For most of his career in broadcasting, he worked for Polish Radio 1, hosting several of its popular news-and-current-affairs programmes as well as words-and-music features, such as Lato z Radiem (Summer with the Radio) and Cztery Pory Roku (Four Seasons of the Year).
His credits included interviews with actors and theatre directors, and coverage of events on the Polish theatre scene.
Matul also gained a reputation as a voice-over actor, working on dozens of popular feature films, including Schindler’s List and The Name of the Rose.
His honours included the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Reborn Poland, the Golden Microphone award for broadcasting achievements and the "Master of Polish Speech" title, which is awarded by Polish Radio to public personalities who serve as role models in language precision and elegance of expression.
