Poland's western city of Poznań is preparing to host the country's first divorce trade fair on November 12, an event designed to offer support and resources for individuals facing the prospect of divorce.

The fair aims to address the myriad issues individuals face during divorce, such as legal formalities, division of assets, and child custody.

Event organizer Joanna Kortas said the fair is not commercial in nature but rather focuses on providing assistance during what can be a traumatic life event.

The event will feature discussions, workshops and individual consultations, aiming to equip visitors with the knowledge and support they need.

"The purpose of this event is to guide and support those who are struggling in their marriages or partnerships, those undergoing a divorce, or even those contemplating one," Kortas explained.

"The rising divorce statistics in Poland prompt the need for such an initiative," she added.

The fair will not feature commercial offers such as post-divorce party planning but will instead offer access to a range of experts including lawyers, mediators, psychologists, detectives and dietitians.

"We are covering all the possible issues that arise during this difficult time in life," Kortas said. "For marriage, we prepare for years, but no one teaches us how to deal with divorce."

According to data from the state-run Statistics Poland agency (GUS), the country recorded 60,162 divorces in 2022, a slight decrease from nearly 60,700 the previous year, but an increase from 51,200 in 2020.

Poland's divorce rate stands at 1.6 per 1,000 inhabitants, just below the European Union average of 1.7 based on the latest 2021 data from the bloc's Eurostat statistical office.

With divorce often leading to stress-related health and dietary issues, the inclusion of dietitians among the specialists has been highlighted as a thoughtful addition to the fair.

The Poznań fair is a response to the lack of similar support for those facing divorce, unlike the increasingly popular wedding fairs, Poland's PAP news agency reported.

Given the interest and need, the organizers said they are already planning future fairs, with the next one scheduled for January 14 in Warsaw.
