The Sopot District Court issued the verdict on Thursday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The man was sentenced for sending Tusk, the leader of Poland's biggest opposition bloc, the Civic Coalition (KO), an email with threats directed at him and his family members in November last year, according to officials.

The defendant said he had sent the message after having a row with his family and under the influence of alcohol, the PAP news agency reported.

The man added he had learnt from state TV that Tusk's Civic Coalition would abolish social benefits such as the 500-plus children's allowance after taking power, which prompted him to send the email.

On Thursday, the District Court in Sopot sentenced the defendant, identified only as Michał B., to 10 months of community service, including 20 hours of community work per month, and a ban on approaching Tusk and his family, as well as ordering him to apologise to Tusk in writing.

The verdict is subject to appeal, the PAP news agency reported.

Tusk, a former Polish prime minister and European Council president, and the candidate of four pro-European Union opposition parties for the country's next prime minister, announced the court's decision on the X social media platform.
