The 38th World Youth Day event will take place globally on November 26 to coincide with the Catholic Feast of Christ the King, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The motto will be "Rejoicing in Hope," a quote from St Paul's Letter to the Romans, the Vatican said.

Pope Francis, in his message for World Youth Day, said that "Christian joy comes from God himself, from our knowledge of his love for us."

The pontiff encouraged young people to "each day, try to share a word of hope with others" and to "sow seeds of hope in the lives of your friends and everyone around you."

Poland's Catholic Church will observe World Youth Day with a variety of events around the country, officials said.

Young people from southern Poland will gather for a three-day meeting in Kraków.

Events will include the Stations of the Cross service on Friday and Holy Mass at the Royal Wawel Castle on Sunday, the PAP news agency reported.

In the Warsaw diocese, World Youth Day will be celebrated on Saturday, including Holy Mass at the Temple of Divine Providence at noon, it said.

World Youth Day events are also planned in the northern port city of Gdańsk, the southern city of Częstochowa and the eastern city of Siedlce, the PAP news agency reported.

World Youth Day is held every year at the level of dioceses.

Every two to three years, the World Youth Day celebration features a worldwide meeting with the pope, most recently in Lisbon, Portugal, in August, with the next one scheduled for 2027 in Seoul, South Korea.

The World Youth Day tradition was started by Polish-born Pope John Paul II in 1985.
