The latest International Civic and Citizenship Education Study, ICCS 2022, was unveiled on Tuesday, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.

The research investigates the changing ways in which young people around the world are prepared for their roles as citizens, according to officials.

In the 2022 edition, Poland has been ranked third among the 22 participating countries, behind Taiwan and Sweden, the portalsamorzadowy.pl website reported.

Polish 14-year-olds scored an average of 554 points for their "knowledge and understanding of concepts and issues related to civics and citizenship," according to the organisers of ICCS 2022.

Taiwan came first with an average score of 583 points, followed by Sweden on 565, portalsamorzadowy.pl reported.

Polish eighth-graders are well-informed about democratic institutions and civic values, "identify strongly with the European Union" and are "proud of living in Poland," said Olga Wasilewska, who oversaw the Polish component of ICCS 2022.

These high levels of civic knowledge also translate into a cautious attitude towards the political system, researchers said.

The ICCS 2022 survey was carried out between March and April 2022, covering Brazil, Bulgaria, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

In Poland, the sample comprised 4,434 students, 2,259 teachers and 170 school principals, portalsamorzadowy.pl reported.
