The Tatra Volunteer Rescue Service (TOPR) and the Tatra National Park on Friday warned that some trails in the mountain range were impassable and unsafe for hikers due to a thick layer of snow.

The snow cover on the Tatra’s Kasprowy Wierch peak has grown to 78 centimetres, with more snow expected over the weekend, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.

The avalanche risk level remained moderate but was expected to rise in the days ahead.

“The snowpack is only moderately well bonded on some steep slopes,” the Tatra Volunteer Rescue Service said in a statement.

It added that although "very large natural avalanches are unlikely," any "activity in the mountains" required an "ability to adequately assess the local avalanche danger.”

Authorities on Friday issued a heavy snowfall alert for Poland's southern regions, advising them to brace for up to 55 centimetres of snow over the weekend.
