The actual number of new COVID-19 cases in Poland is much higher than shown by official statistics, as many of those infected do not self-test, a medical expert has said.

Michał Sutkowski made the assessment in an interview with Polish state news agency PAP, published on Sunday.

On Friday, Poland's government reported 2,954 new COVID-19 cases, including 2,115 new infections and 839 reinfections.

Eight people died of COVID-19, six of whom had co-existing conditions, according to officials.

Sutkowski, the spokesman for the Association of Family Doctors in Poland (KLRP), said the figures represented a significant increase in new COVID-19 cases.

He added that the actual number of infections was "much higher" than the daily average of 2,000 to 4,000 cases reported by the health ministry in Warsaw.

According to the expert, this is because "some patients don't self-test."

Sutkowski said the examination of sewage in the big cities "shows there are many new COVID-19 cases."

The expert said that Poles stopped taking precautions although COVID-19 remains dangerous, especially for older people, resulting in several deaths a day, state news agency PAP reported.

Poland on Wednesday rolled out a new vaccine against COVID-19, tailored to the XBB.1.5 subvariant.

Health officials urged people over 60, those with reduced immunity and healthcare workers to get a dose of the jab.
