„Between December 29 and January 1, the police recorded 160 accidents which had claimed the lives of 18 individuals and left 181 injured,” Robert Opas of the Traffic Police Department was quoted as saying by Poland's PAP news agency on Tuesday.

He added that despite the same number of accidents as the previous year during a similar period, there were three fewer fatalities and two fewer injuries.

Checks carried out by officers during the New Year transition identified 924 intoxicated drivers, 56 more than the previous year.

According to police data, New Year's Eve saw the apprehension of 200 intoxicated individuals, with six fatalities resulting from accidents as opposed to five in 2022.

On New Year's Day, 38 accidents occurred, claiming four lives, in contrast to 11 casualties the previous year.

On the first day of 2024, the police detained more intoxicated drivers than on that day in 2023 - 356 compared to 299 the previous year, according to PAP.
