World Snow Day is held annually since 2012 to create opportunities for children and youth around the globe to try snow sports and spend their leisure time outdoors.

Zakopane, dubbed "the winter capital of Poland," is one of the host cities.

Officials have prepared a "two-day celebration of children, sports and snow" to mark the 2024 World Snow Day, which takes place this coming weekend, January 20-21.

The programme starts at Zakopane's Nosal Ski School at 3 p.m. on Saturday, with ski and snowboard relay races for children and parents, city administrators said.

It's a competition for child-and-parent pairs, and those who clock the shortest combined time will win, guaranteeing a fun time for everyone, organisers said.

There will also be a torch-lit ride and a "sweet obstacle course" prepared by the candy-maker Wawel, according to officials.

On Sunday, the event moves to Zakopane's Rówień Krupowa municipal park, starting at 11 a.m., the organisers said.

There will be a multitude of activities, competitions and other snow-related attractions, and attractive prizes for winners, Zakopane officals said.

The programme also includes "training in how to survive an avalanche," rides on snow scooters, and the Wawel "sweet obstacle course," according to the organisers.

In 2017, Zakopane was named "the world's best organiser" of World Snow Day.
