Opposition makes U-turn on Ukrainian grain?

Poland's leading opposition party, Law and Justice, has called for an "immediate" embargo on Ukrainian grain, taking the side of Polish farmers in the dispute. This represents a reversal of previous positions, a change much commented on in the Polish press and social media.

The former prime minister, now member of the opposition, Mateusz Morawiecki has today called for an immediate embargo on Ukrainian grain in response to the rising tensions between Ukraine, Polish farmers and the EU:

This new position stands in marked contrast to earlier statements of Morawiecki's Law and Justice led government and many are accusing Law and Justice of a "U-Turn".

In 2022, the Head of Law and Justice, Jarosław Kaczyński, had said that "Ukrainian grain is no threat to Polish farmers." Senator Waldy Dzikowski, for example, from the ruling party Civic Platform has accused Kaczyński of opportunism, "Suddenly he is attaching himself to the protests. It all smells of hypocrisy."

Others are "reminding" Kaczyński that at the same time Kaczyński was reassuring Polish farmers that Ukrainian grain represented no threat, the current prime minister Donald Tusk was warning about the risks of low-price Ukrainian grain. On 7 June 2022 Tusk warned about the risk of cheap grain imports from Ukraine.
