This tool, which monitors the car’s operation in a manner similar to black boxes in airplanes, aims to improve road safety.

An Event Data Recorder (EDR) is a device installed in some automobiles to record information related to traffic collisions.

The system does not have the capability to track individual vehicles, capture driver images or record traveled routes. Access to the collected data, via specialized software, will be restricted to police or forensic experts.

The mandatory device will record data such as speed changes, the number of passengers, engine RPM, light activation, brake usage, seat positions, and seatbelt activation times.

Its use can significantly facilitate detecting insurance fraud or resolving various disputes during road incidents and accidents, according to experts.

Such devices have been installed in cars for many years, so they will not be new to most drivers.

The EU regulations, which take effect on July 6, will prevent drivers from registering vehicles without an EDR in the airbag system.
