Starting September 1, Ukrainian families interested in collecting Poland's generous "800-plus" social benefit will have to send their children to Polish schools.
Education Minister Barbara Nowacka told public broadcaster Polish Radio that schools around the country are prepared to handle the influx of new students.
"From the new school year, intercultural assistants will be firmly established in Polish schools," she said in an interview.
"We had to make the difficult decision to enforce compulsory education, which was also challenging for the Ukrainian side," Nowacka told Polish Radio. "It's hard to estimate how many Ukrainian children are outside the system. Polish organizations report that there are between 130,000 and 180,000."
Previously, Ukrainian children were exempt from attending Polish schools if they were participating in remote learning within the Ukrainian education system.
