His son, Norbert Szurkowski, worked in one of the towers that collapsed 23 years ago and was among the eight Polish victims of that day.

According to Przegląd Sportowy, while Norbert usually ran his own business outside New York City, he was working in one of the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001. He was in the middle of wallpapering an office in the tower that would soon collapse.

In his autobiography, Ryszard Szurkowski recalled visiting his son in Poland just days before the tragedy. He mentioned that they spent the entire night talking before Norbert’s departure.

Norbert left behind two children, but he never got to meet his youngest child—his partner was in the early stages of her second pregnancy during the attack. Their daughter, Klaudia, was born eight months after the New York terror attacks and never had the chance to meet her father.

The 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center claimed 2,996 lives, including eight Poles working in the towers.

Besides 31-year-old Norbert Szurkowski, the victims included Maria Jakubiak, Dorota Kopiczko, Gina Szejnberg, Anna Pietkiewicz, Łukasz Milewski, Jan Maciejewski, and Józef Piskadło.
