Poland's longest-living hippo celebrates her 39th birthday

Pelagia, the Warsaw Zoo’s beloved Nile hippopotamus and Poland’s oldest of her kind, celebrates her 39th birthday today.

Pelagia, who was originally named Isaura after the Brazilian telenovela The Slave Isaura, was later renamed Pelagia when she was moved to Paris shortly after birth.

Born in 1985, the same year the soapopera was popular, she initially received the name Isaura in reference to the show. After spending some years in France and Germany, she arrived at the Warsaw Zoo, where she has become a beloved figure.

Pelagia is the longest-living Nile hippopotamus in Poland and is known for her unique semi-aquatic lifestyle.

To mark Pelagia’s birthday, the Warsaw Zoo is holding a special event at the Hipopotamiarnia pool, complete with a feeding demonstration and a range of activities for kids and teens. Pelagia’s birthday at the Warsaw Zoo

Hippos, the only surviving members of the genus Hippopotamus, are notable for their ability to live both in water and on land, and are closely related to whales and dolphins, though they also share similarities with pigs and other ungulates.

To celebrate Pelagia’s birthday, the Warsaw Zoo is hosting a special event at the Hipopotamiarnia pool, featuring a feeding show and various activities for children and teenagers.
