In Lądek-Zdrój in southwestern Poland, a man accused of theft involving alcohol and mineral water underwent expedited legal proceedings.
The court found him guilty and sentenced him to six months in prison, though the verdict is not yet final, said
Mariusz Pindera, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Świdnica.
This marks the first ruling in a case against an individual charged with looting in a flood-affected area in the Kłodzko District Court.
The man was charged with "particularly audacious theft," which is significant because Polish law does not specifically define the crime of looting.
Polish PM Donald Tusk emphasized that those engaging in looting will face harsher penalties.
The police also noted that not all reports of thefts are accurate, including allegations of a jewelry store being ransacked.
Yesterday on Radio Poland, we reported that 10 looters were arrested across the country for stealing from flood victims.
MP Cezary Tomczyk also warned on Polish Radio that looters could face up to 10 years in prison.
At night, areas affected by the flood are patrolled by special units equipped with thermal imaging and night vision equipment.
