In a unanimously adopted resolution, the senators described Popiełuszko as "a spiritual beacon for millions of Poles during the darkest years of martial law, and an indefatigable defender of human dignity, truth and justice."

The resolution said that Popiełuszko's "life and pastoral work have become symbols of courage, steadfastness, and the fight for truth and freedom."

The senators recalled that his homilies during the monthly "Masses for the Homeland" were "a bold voice of defiance against the lies and terror of the communist regime."

They added: "It was for his unyielding beliefs that Father Popiełuszko paid the ultimate price. On October 19, 1984, he was abducted, tortured and murdered by officers of the communist secret police. His martyrdom shocked both Poland and the world, and the memory of his courage and sacrifice remains deeply embedded in the hearts of the Polish people."

In 2010, the Roman Catholic Church beatified Popiełuszko, declaring him a martyr and placing him on the path to sainthood.

On October 19, the 40th anniversary of Popiełuszko’s death, Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz will celebrate a mass at the Popiełuszko Shrine in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district.

The service will be preceded by a National Papal March under the motto "Conquer evil with good," a biblical message that was central to Popiełuszko’s teachings.
