In addition to monthly breast self-exams, it is also important to undergo routine check-ups. Women aged 45 to 74 can receive a free mammogram every two years.
Breast ultrasound is recommended for women between 20 and 30 years old every two years, and annually after the age of 30.
Breast cancer can be beaten due to increasingly effective treatment methods, but regular screening is essential, emphasizes oncologist Dr. Katarzyna Pogoda from the National Cancer Institute in Warsaw in an interview with Polish Radio.
"If we utilize screening tests, we will detect the disease more often at an early stage, which translates to higher cure rates," she asserts.
It's essential to recognize that this disease can affect men as well, although it is quite uncommon - breast cancer is estimated to represent one out of every ten cases of breast malignancies.
European Breast Cancer Day is part of the "Pink October" campaign, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, symbolized by the pink ribbon. On this occasion, many buildings, including the Polish Senate, will be illuminated in pink today.
