Every year in October, there is a peak in the number of poisoning cases as Poles love to forage in forests at this time of year. On top of that, this season the country faces growing trade in toxic mushrooms with health authorities sounding the alarm.

“We strongly advise against foraging mushrooms you are unfamiliar with. Only pick those you're certain are safe to eat”, said Marek Waszczewski, spokesperson for the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate

“Not everyone should eat mushrooms. They are definitely not recommended for pregnant women or young children”, he added.

Mushroom picking is a popular seasonal activity in Poland, especially come September early October, when the forests are abundant with various types of edible mushrooms. This tradition is deeply rooted in Polish culture and is often a family affair.
