The law allows many widows and widowers to either retain their current pension and add 15 percent of their deceased spouse's family pension or opt for the family pension plus 15 percent of their own, state news agency PAP reported.

Officials have hailed the citizen-driven measure as a significant step toward addressing the needs of widowed individuals, ensuring they receive adequate support after the loss of a spouse.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Family, Labour, and Social Policy Minister Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk told reporters last year that the legislative initiative reflected the government's commitment to assisting vulnerable groups, particularly older adults facing financial challenges after bereavement.

"We care for the weakest and deliver on our promises," Dziemianowicz-Bąk said at the time.
