The Tatra Volunteer Rescue Service (TOPR) cautioned hikers on Monday that more snow had fallen on mountain trails, creating hazardous conditions and necessitating appropriate winter gear.

It said in a statement that "the snowpack is moderately to poorly bonded on many steep slopes," adding that in some cases "large ... or very large natural avalanches are possible."

The rescue service also warned that "activity in the mountains requires extensive experience and skill, as well as significant ability to adequately assess avalanche danger locally," advising tourists to avoid steep slopes.

The public was urged to adhere to "elementary principles of safety."

The avalanche risk level was described as "considerable."

The snow cover on the Kasprowy Wierch peak has exceeded 85 centimetres, while the Valley of Five Polish Ponds area had a snow depth of 122 cm, state news agency PAP reported.
