Polish community in Chicago concerned over Trump’s deportation plans

Immigration lawyers told Polish Radio that the issue has gained significant attention with the start of President Donald Trump's new term.

Since taking office, the Republican representative has been focused on fulfilling his key campaign promise – deporting millions of undocumented immigrants. His efforts began in Chicago, where thousands of Poles live without regularized immigration status.

Local law firms are receiving numerous calls, offering not only legal advice but also providing support for confused individuals.

"Anyone who is thinking realistically about their life in the U.S. is worried about their future. Despite lacking legal status, many still see their future in this country," said immigration attorney Ewa Brożek in an interview with Jan Pachlowski of Polish Radio.

The expert estimates that in 2022 alone, undocumented immigrants contributed $70 billion in taxes to the U.S. economy. "Their status was never checked when they paid taxes or health insurance. Many of these individuals run large businesses and employ workers legally," she explained.
