Doctors, who first treated the severely injured five-year-old girl, confirmed that she had to be carried through the hospital because she was in too much pain to walk.

Stepfather drowns stepdaughter for refusing to eat... paper

The child, identified as Oliwia, suffered bruises, scratches, a swollen face, and weeks-old intracranial hematomas. Her stepfather, who was intoxicated at the time of his arrest, reportedly beat her because she refused to eat... paper. He then doused her with icy water, forcing it into her mouth until she vomited.

The 39-year-old called emergency services himself and has since been detained. He now faces charges of physical and psychological abuse of a vulnerable person.

When police arrived at the home, its walls bore marks of bloody child-sized handprints. Inside, they also found the stepfather’s 35-year-old partner, who was caring for their three shared children, including month-old twins. Prosecutors have not ruled out charges against her as well.

The Gniezno District Court has ordered a three-month detention for a 39-year-old man who had been abusing his partner's 5-year-old daughter, with the child's mother also facing charges; the suspect could face up to 8 years in prison. "The woman and her partner face up to 8 years in prison. After gathering expert opinions and analyzing medical documentation, the charges could be upgraded to more severe ones," assures Chief Sergeant Anna Osińska, Press Officer of the Gniezno Police Department.

Little girl apologizes after abuse and vows to be good

Doctors speaking to TVN24 reported that Oliwia apologized tearfully to the hospital staff for being admitted and promised to "be good" and never refuse food again.

"This demonstrates the child's deep and lasting sense of guilt toward her family," said Dr. Mateusz Hen, deputy medical director of the Gniezno hospital.
