Warsaw plans to install mobile anti-terror barriers on Royal Route

The city of Warsaw plans to introduce new mobile anti-terror road barriers on the Royal Route, replacing existing concrete barriers used on weekends. The barriers – easily moved with minimal heavy equipment – will protect against vehicle-borne attacks, officials said.

The Royal Route, comprising Nowy Świat and Krakowskie Przedmieście, often hosts marches and protests. Transporting concrete blocks repeatedly has proved cumbersome. The new system will allow for a simple transition between “open” and “closed” modes, enabling easier pedestrian and emergency access.

The barriers must withstand a seven-ton vehicle traveling at around 48 km/h and prevent it from entering the protected zone. At 12 cm high when open (allowing regular traffic flow), they will rise to 120 cm in closed mode, still permitting pedestrians and cyclists to pass.

City authorities have allocated PLN 1.2 million (about USD 296,000) for the project. Three companies submitted bids; two came in around PLN 2 million, exceeding the budget.
