Poland has just faced one of the coldest nights of the year, with temperatures plunging well below freezing nationwide and reaching extreme lows in the Tatra Mountains. Meteorologists caution that even colder conditions are on the way, as mountain peaks have consistently recorded temperatures below -20°C (-4°F) for several days.
Arctic blast tits Poland
According to the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute (IMGW), the coldest official weather station in Poland last night (February 17-18) was in Jelenia Góra, located in the southwestern part of the country, where temperatures dropped to -17.7°C (0.1°F).
Among all measuring stations, the lowest recorded temperature was in Jakuszyce, in the same region, reaching -22.8°C (-9°F).
Locally, at the weather station in Litworowy Kocioł, considered Poland's cold pole, in the Western Tatras, temperatures dropped to -41.13°C (-42°F) around 6:30 AM on February 17, 2025, as reported by meteorologists.

Frost record of the 21st century recorded in the Tatra Mountains
As explained by Bartosz Czarnecki, PhD, an atmospheric scientist and assistant professor at the Department of Meteorology and Climatology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, this is "the lowest recorded temperature in Poland in the 21st century" and also close to the all-time record for the coldest temperature ever measured in the Tatra Mountains.
Coldest temperature in Poland since 1940
Until now, the lowest officially recorded temperature in Poland was -41°C (-42°F) in Siedlce, a city in eastern Poland, in 1940. Similarly frigid conditions were reported in Olkusz (southern Poland) and Poronin (southern Poland) during an exceptionally cold February in 1929.
In the 21st century, one of the coldest temperatures was recorded in Puścizna Rękowiańska, a village in the Nowy Targ County (southern Poland), where the temperature dropped to -38.9°C (-38°F).
