Polish prosecutors have launched an investigation into alleged abuse of power by former directors of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, including Karol Nawrocki, a PiS-backed presidential candidate.
Nawrocki, who is a historian by training and previously pursued boxing, was the director of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk (2017–2021) and is currently the head of Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), a government body overseeing historical research and lustration.
The probe focuses on whether they illegally used luxury museum-owned apartments without paying for them between 2017 and 2024.
Reports suggest Nawrocki stayed in a deluxe suite for over 200 days while living just 5 km away. He denies wrongdoing, claiming the apartment was used for quarantine during COVID-19 and official meetings.
The current museum leadership disputes his explanation, stating the apartments were intended for commercial rental and guest accommodations, not personal use.
On Monday, the Polish news portal Wyborcza.pl published an investigation by Duży Format - its in-depth journalism section - detailing the controversial ties between Karol Nawrocki and his former sparring partner Patryk Masiak (Wielki Bu), a freak-fighter who served two years in prison for kidnapping a woman.
