Since April 8, the documentary You Are Not Alone, directed by Karolina Lucyna Domagalska, has been available to stream on Prime Video via the Viaplay Films & Series channel.
The film offers a powerful look at a pivotal moment in Poland’s recent social and political history - the fight for reproductive rights under one of the world’s most restrictive abortion laws.
Fighting for reproductive freedom under Poland’s near-total abortion ban
At the heart of the film is Aborcyjny Dream Team, four women who operate a hotline supporting those seeking access to abortion - help long denied by both the previous Polish government and state hospitals.
After conservative right-wing parties imposed a near-total abortion ban, the group started advising women on how to safely self-manage abortions at home or travel abroad for care. Poland’s increasingly restrictive abortion laws have made the country one of the most restrictive in the world.
Although a change in administration allowed the activists in 2025 to open Poland's first abortion clinic (located near the Sejm, the lower house of Parliament), their earlier struggles with authorities had already attracted international attention and garnered support from women around the world.
In 2023, one of the activists, Justyna Wydrzyńska, was sentenced to eight months of community service for mailing abortion pills to a woman who was pregnant by an abusive partner during the COVID-19 pandemic. The verdict marked the first conviction of its kind in Europe and drew worldwide scrutiny.

A movement for women’s rights and bodily autonomy
Shot between 2020 and 2023, the documentary not only recounts the personal experiences of the activists but also revisits the massive nationwide protests and women-led marches that galvanized public support and encouraged broader female participation in public life.
“One in three women worldwide will have an abortion. That’s a fact. But in Poland, near-total abortion laws reflect a government that values the life of a fetus over that of a woman.” This stark message, featured as one of the film’s taglines, highlights what’s at stake.
Due to its subject matter, the film was unable to secure public funding in Poland in previous years. It was ultimately financed by Sweden’s Viaplay platform.
