Kurek joined the uprising against Nazi German forces occupying Poland when she was just 15. The insurrection began in the Polish capital on 1 August 1944.

From the first days of August, BohaterON said, she courageously tended the wounded, saved young fighters and comrades, and remained with them in their final moments.

The organisation urged the public to express gratitude for her courage and service to others, and to pay tribute to a heroine of the Warsaw Uprising.
