During a press conference, Prosecutor Alicja Szelągowska of the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office said the suspect faces between eight years in prison and a life sentence if convicted.
She added that the case involves "active participation in spying activities" and that the individual is currently giving a statement to authorities.
A request for pre-trial detention has been submitted to the court, which has 24 hours to make a decision.
The prosecutor’s office did not disclose whether the suspect had admitted to the charges or provide further details about the statement given.
Media reports suggest possible links to Russian and Belarusian intelligence.
