Three new cases of coronavirus infection were confirmed in Poland on Thursday morning, bringing the country’s total to 47.

The government on Wednesday announced that all schools, universities, nurseries, cinemas, theatres and museums would be closed as Poland steps up efforts to prevent the spread of the virus.

Following the move, Szumowski appealed to young people to take the measures seriously rather than use the time away from school to party.

He said: “This is the mistake made by Italians. They spent this time in clubs and at parties. Now we can see the results: the collapse of the health service… a large number of deaths."

Italy has been hit harder by the virus than any other country in Europe.
