Voting in a runoff presidential election in Poland on Sunday amid an ongoing COVID-19 epidemic will be safer than going to the shops, Health Minister Łukasz Szumowski has insisted.

Szumowski said on Friday that polling stations, unlike many other locations, will have strict sanitary rules in place, with surfaces disinfected and people required to keep a safe distance from one another.

He added that under rules brought in for the second round, disabled people, pregnant women, people with children aged under three, and citizens over 60 will have priority access to polling stations.

The first round of Poland’s presidential election did not lead to a visible rise in COVID-19 infections, the health ministry said earlier this week.

No candidate won an outright majority in the first round on June 28, when some voters complained of long queues.

Conservative incumbent Andrzej Duda will face centrist challenger Rafał Trzaskowski in a runoff election at the weekend.

A total of 37,216 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Poland, with 1,562 deaths from the COVID-19 respiratory disease so far, officials said on Friday.
