364 COVID-19 deaths per million population in Poland: health ministry

After a recent surge in infections, Poland's COVID-19 death rate has risen to 364 per million population, new statistics have shown.

The figure marks an increase from 277 fatalities per million reported a week earlier.

To compare, Belgium has 1,345 deaths per million residents since the start of the pandemic, according to new data released by the Polish health ministry on Tuesday, while Spain has 922 and Italy reports 835.

The list of countries severely hit by the coronavirus also includes Britain, with 812 deaths per million population, France with 754, and the Czech Republic, Poland's southern neighbor, with 687, according to the Polish health ministry.

Croatia, the newest European Union member, has a slightly lower proportion of coronavirus deaths than Poland, at 341 per million residents, while Austria has 272 and Poland's western neighbor Germany reports 174, the new data found.

Meanwhile, Poland's northeastern neighbor Lithuania is the European country least affected by the pandemic among those listed by the Polish health ministry, with 145 coronavirus-related deaths per million population, 20 less than Greece.

Poland on Wednesday reported 15,362 fresh COVID-19 infections and a record 674 new deaths linked to the coronavirus.

A total of 924,422 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Poland since the pandemic began, and 14,988 have died in connection with the COVID-19 respiratory disease so far, public health officials announced.

On Thursday, November 19, the country reported its second-highest daily toll of 637 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On Saturday, November 7, the Polish health ministry reported a record 27,875 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country in early March.

Poland in early June reported a coronavirus death rate of 31 per million population.
