As the country battles a second wave of the coronavirus, the latest figure marks a sharp increase from 364 fatalities per million reported a week earlier.

But despite the spike, Poland remains less affected by the coronavirus than some other nations in Europe in terms of its death rate during the pandemic, according to the Polish health ministry.

Among European countries, Belgium has 1,425 deaths per million residents since the start of the pandemic, according to new data released by the Polish health ministry on Tuesday, while Spain has 964 and Italy reports 920.

The list of countries severely hit by the coronavirus also includes Britain, with 859 deaths per million population, France with 807, and the Czech Republic, Poland's southern neighbor, with 774, according to the Polish health ministry.

Croatia, the newest European Union member, has a slightly lower proportion of coronavirus deaths than Poland, at 436 per million residents, while Austria has 353 and Greece reports 231, the new data found.

Meanwhile, Poland's northeastern neighbor Lithuania is the European country least affected by the pandemic among those listed by the Polish health ministry, with 187 coronavirus-related deaths per million population, 14 less than Poland's western neighbor Germany.

Poland on Tuesday reported 9,105 new coronavirus infections and 449 more deaths, bringing its total number of cases to 999,924 and fatalities to 17,599.

On Wednesday, November 25, the country reported its highest daily toll of 674 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On Saturday, November 7, the Polish health ministry reported 27,875 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country in early March.

Poland in early June reported a coronavirus death rate of 31 per million population.
