The new, highly contagious variant was confirmed by health authorities in "a 7-year-old girl from Gdańsk," the Polish health ministry said in a tweet, adding that the child was tested on December 10 because of experiencing flu-like symptoms.

On Friday, Poland confirmed its second case of the omicron COVID-19 variant in a 3-year-old girl from Warsaw.

A day earlier, Poland reported its first case of omicron in a 30-year-old woman from the southern African country of Lesotho.

The woman attended the United Nations' 2021 Internet Governance Forum in the southern Polish city of Katowice earlier this month.

Poland on Sunday reported 15,976 new coronavirus infections and 70 more deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 3,958,840 and fatalities to 91,485.

A range of new coronavirus restrictions took effect across the country this week as it seeks to fend off the new, highly transmissible omicron variant.

The first Polish citizen diagnosed with omicron was a teenager who tested positive earlier this week during a trip to China, according to a spokesman for the Polish health ministry.
