In the video, which was posted on the presidential website and social media, the head of state said: “Christmas is the most eagerly awaited time of the year - a time when we want to be close to our loved ones. A time when the fondest memories are rekindled.”

The First Lady noted that Christmas enjoyed “a special place” in the Polish tradition, as reflected “in the unique festive ornaments, dishes and gifts, as well as numerous rites and customs, both local and those observed throughout the country.”

The president also referred to the time-honoured Polish tradition of leaving one place setting empty for unexpected visitors at Christmas Eve.

“It’s a symbol of caring for others, and a sign that we remember about those who may not be able to spend Christmas with their close ones,” he stressed.

“As we share the wafer and sing Christmas carols, may our heartfelt thoughts be with those who are on duty this evening,” the president said, mentioning healthcare workers and the forces protecting Poland’s eastern border.

Agata Kornhauser-Duda called on Polish citizens to remember those experiencing distress.

“The good we do to others comes back to us, and helping another brings profound joy and satisfaction,” she emphasised.

“We would like to wish you just such festive joy, as well as good health, family harmony and well-being,” the president added.

“To all compatriots home and abroad, may all your plans and dreams come true, but also may you find inner peace, free from the cares and concerns produced by the previous year,” the presidential couple said.

“May the Child of God bless our Homeland and support its strength with its own. Have a cheerful, merry Christmas. All the best!,” the president and First Lady concluded.
