Adam Niedzielski announced the figures at a news conference in Warsaw, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
He met with reporters after speaking to Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and a panel that advises the government on COVID-19 response.
COVID-19 cases rise by 60 percent a week
Niedzielski said that “over the past two weeks, COVID-19 cases have been growing by some 60 percent a week.”
He added that the government would focus on the number of hospitalisations.
“It’s one of the conclusions from our discussion with experts today,” he told reporters.
Restrictions after hospital cases hit 5,000
Niedzielski reiterated that restrictions would not be reintroduced until the number of hospitalisations exceeds 5,000 “unless the situation requires a swifter response.”
He said that as of Friday there were 450 hospital cases in Poland.
He recommended that at-risk groups, including people over 70 and those with impaired immunity, “wear masks, especially in shops and on public transport, and use disinfection and social distancing.”
Poland on Friday reported 1,046 fresh COVID-19 cases, including 152 reinfections. There were no deaths of people with COVID-19 over the previous 24 hours, officials said.
Since March 4, 2020, when the first Polish case was detected, the number of COVID-19 infections has totalled 6,020,679. There have been 116,449 deaths of people with COVID-19, the PAP news agency reported.
In May, Poland downgraded its classification of the COVID-19 pandemic, lifting "a state of epidemic" and announcing "a state of epidemic threat" instead.
