Family and Social Policy Minister Marlena Maląg told reporters that the Polish conservative government’s "Good Start" programme aimed to help parents buy textbooks and other school supplies for their children by offering a handout of PLN 300 [EUR 63, USD 64] for every child before the start of each school year.

Monday was the first day of payouts ahead of the new school year, public broadcaster Polish Radio reported.

On Monday alone, government cash transfers under the programme were expected to come to PLN 33 million and benefit around 112,000 children nationwide, according to Maląg.

In all, the government has set aside PLN 1.33 billion [EUR 280 million, USD 283 million] for the "Good Start" programme this year, officials said.

Polish schools in late June closed for the summer, with classes scheduled to resume at the start of September.
