With May 1 (Labour Day) and May 3 (Constitution Day) public holidays, many Poles took the opportunity to head off on what has become known as the May long weekend.
Officers said they stopped 1,840 drunk drivers during the six-day period.
During a similar period last year, the death toll was higher, at 33, and the number of those injured was also higher, at 389, Robert Opas from the country’s General Police Headquarters (KGP) told reporters on Thursday.
He added that some 4,500 police were out on the roads each day during this year's May holiday break in an effort to improve safety.
A total of 439 drivers temporarily lost their licences for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 kph in built-up areas, according to Opas.
