His route has taken him from the western city of Lviv to the southern Kherson region.

A statement by the Vatican Press Office says that, following the destruction of a dam there, "the innocent population is in great distress and many people have lost their lives.”

Krajewski is being accompanied by Jan Sobiło, a Polish-born Ukrainian Roman Catholic prelate who serves as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Kharkiv-Zaporizhia.

They are making their journey by van, bringing a load of needed medicines and visiting various religious communities and parishes along the way.

In its statement, the Vatican Press Office writes that “a second truck full of food ... medicines and medical supplies will be delivered to the areas most affected by the dam explosion in the coming days.”

The statement adds that Krajewski’s mission “is evangelical and highlights Pope Francis' closeness to tormented Ukraine.”

Bishop Sobiło has told the media that "this is a very important time for Ukraine," particularly for the frontline regions.

”We are already very tired with this war and hence we take the pope’s gesture and his presence in the person of Cardinal Krajewski as an expression of his love and concern for us, something which gives us strength and helps go through this difficult time,” he said.

Krajewski is Prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Service of Charity.
