The international meeting of "Jewish inhabitants of Lublin and their descendants" began in the Polish city on July 2, according to organizers.

The event, known as the Lubliner Reunion, is being attended by participants from countries including Israel, the United States, Canada, France, Britain, Australia and Mexico.

The gathering, which runs until Friday, aims to “create a bond between the descendants of Lublin's former Jewish inhabitants and the modern city,” according to City Hall.

It also offers opportunities for those taking part to learn more about local history, regional broadcaster Radio Lublin reported.

The Lubliner Reunion meeting focuses on "the history and culture of Jewish Lublin” and includes genealogy workshops, themed walks, commemorations, sharing of personal stories, artistic events and joint exploration of the city and surrounding areas.

Participants can find out about the history and contemporary life of Lublin, visit the city's former Jewish districts and "meet people who bring the memory of the former community to new generations on a daily basis."

The Lubliner Reunion meeting is expected to help promote the Polish city and its region internationally.

The first such event took place in 1947. The second one, in 2017, attracted more than 250 participants from around the world, according to City Hall.

"For several hundred years, Jews were associated with Lublin and played a large role in shaping its identity," it said.

"The history of Lublin cannot be told without the history of the Jews who lived here," City Hall added.

Lublin is about 170 kilometres southeast of the capital Warsaw and some 100 km from the Ukrainian border.
