Poland boosts spending on child mental health: minister

Poland has quadrupled its expenditures on child and adolescent mental health over the past four years, to more than PLN 1 billion (EUR 224 million) in 2023, the country’s health minister has said.

Adam Niedzielski announced the figures at a news conference in the eastern city of Lublin on Monday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.  

Spending on child mental health rises from EUR 56 mln in 2019 to EUR 224 mln in 2023: health minister

The health minister said: “Spending on child and adolescent mental health services has increased from PLN 250 million (EUR 56 million) in 2019 to more than PLN 1 billion (EUR 224 million) earmarked for 2023.”

He added: “These funds are mainly allocated to outpatient centres.”

Niedzielski also said that the overall spending on mental health services for people of all ages has “more than doubled” in recent years.

At Monday’s news conference, the health minister also announced PLN 80 million (EUR 18 million) in new funding for children’s mental health hospitals over the next two years, the Rynek Zdrowia website reported. 

He said that the government had changed the model of Poland’s mental health services, from a hospital-based model to a non-residential model. 

The health minister  told reporters: “There are already 400 outpatient mental health centres in Poland, which was a target for 2030.”

He added Poland also had 136 “second-level centres,” employing psychiatrists and offering residential help, as well as 32 residential mental health care facilities, the PAP news agency reported.
