Andrzej Duda signed the EUR 5.4 billion plan into law at a ceremony in the central town of Tarczyn on Monday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
The president was accompanied by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Family and Social Policy Minister Marlena Maląg.
Introduced by Poland’s ruling conservatives Law and Justice (PiS) in 2016, the measure, originally named Family 500+, and now set to be renamed Family 800+, is a universal monthly benefit available to all children from birth until they turn 18, according to officials.
As of January 1, 2024, it will rise to PLN 800 (EUR 181), the PAP news agency reported.
After signing off on its expansion, Duda said: “Poland needs to develop, socially as well as demographically. Family is the biggest mainstay for future development.”
The president added: “The increase in child benefit is an investment.”
He said that “an investment in a person, in society, in the family, in children” was the best there could be, the PAP news agency reported.
