The art of design is not easy - also (or maybe: especially!) when it concerns designing the decorations of cakes. It can also bring a lot of satisfaction and joy, though. Poles Angelika Chwyć and Renata Martyna know it very well - as they have just been crowned at the special edition of the Cake Designers World Championship held in Milan.

The preparations took almost two years, but it was worth it - as the combination of training and talent let the Polish cake-design masters defeat the teams from Italy (2nd place), Belgium (3rd place), China, USA, Mexico, Japan - and many others. It is also worth mentioning that through their success Chwyć and Martyna kept the title in Poland - as the previous edition of the contest held in 2019 was won by another Pole, Jowita Woszczyńska.

The theme of this year's Cake Designers World Championship was "The Music of Your Nation". It was announced two years before the competition, so that the teams had time to design their decorations, which can take a very long time (and a lot of trials and errors). Polish competitors' cake had four levels, each named after an element: Earth (classical music), water (pop music), fire (rock music) and wind (folk music).

The road to Milan was not easy. "First, we had to win the Expo Sweet Cake Decorating Polish Championship - to claim the right to represent our country at the World Championship in Italy" - said Angelika Chwyć, speaking for Polish Radio.

"Preparing a show cake which - importantly - travels abroad to the contest in its entirety, starts with the project. First we created a design, but not a detailed one - just an outline of proportions, because that was the most important thing so that we know more or less what we are aiming for" - the Polish World Champion continued.

"The technique I initially chose to create the detailed edible figurines of musicians did not survive the short trip to Renata Martyna's studio, where we were assembling the cake. So they certainly wouldn't have survived the trip to Italy'' - Angelika Chwyć admitted. "There were indeed a lot of things that went wrong: we went through many months of trials, and many things needed to be replaced on the way. Yet, creating all these characters and decorations taught me a lot, and really cool things came out of it in the end. I will definitely pass them on to my students during the cake-design classes I teach" - the Champion concluded.
