The four little lions, two females and two males, came to the world in early September, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

They join three Angolan lions, two females and one male, already on the books of the Chorzów zoo.

The local authorities are building a modern, 320-square-metre complex that will house the extended lion herd and put the animals on year-round display for the visitors, the PAP news agency reported.

Thanks to the expansion, the Chorzów zoo has been able to join an international lion-breeding programme, becoming only the third zoological facility in the world that breeds Angolan lions, according to officials.

Joining this select group has “boosted the competitiveness and attractiveness” of the Chorzów zoo, its spokesman told reporters.

Angolan lions are a subspecies of the endangered African lion, whose population is estimated to have dropped by 43 percent over the past 21 years, according to experts.

At present, there are just 77 Angolan lions in zoos around the world, meaning they could disappear within a decade, the PAP news agency reported.
