The service was led by the Chief Rabbi of Poland, Michael Schudrich, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Also in attendance were the Israeli ambassador to Poland, Yacov Livne, and Wojciech Kolarski, an aide to Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Participants said the prayer for the dead, El mole Rachamim (God Full Of Mercy), before Schudrich performed the hymn Kaddish in honour of all the victims,  the PAP news agency reported.

The gathering then sang Israel’s national anthem, Hatikwa, and the song Oseh Shalom.

Schudrich said the participants prayed for the souls of those killed by Hamas, who included their friends and loved ones, as well as asking God for peace.

Attending Tuesday’s service was Yuval Dancyg, the son of Alex Dancyg, a Warsaw-born Israeli historian and advocate of Polish-Israeli cooperation, who is believed to be among the more than 200 people who have been kidnapped by Hamas, the PAP news agency reported.

The Israeli envoy to Poland, Livne, told PAP that Hamas “slaughtered innocent people,” adding that his country “draws comfort from the support received in Poland and around the world.”

The war between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7, when the Palestinian militant group launched a deadly attack from the Gaza Strip, killing 1,400 people and kidnapping more than 200 as hostages, British broadcaster BBC reported.

Israel has since been bombing Gaza in retaliation, killing over 10,300 people, including more than 4,100 children, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.

Israel also launched a ground offensive and on Tuesday claimed its troops had reached “the heart of Gaza City,” the BBC reported.
