Some 3 million Poles have diabetes, and many more are at risk of the disease, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Health professionals have advised people to check their blood sugar regularly to detect potential problems at an early stage.

Diabetologist Prof. Leszek Czupryniak warned that obesity can lead to type 2 diabetes.

Prof. Dorota Zozulińska-Ziółkiewicz, a former head of the Polish Diabetes Association, has stressed the role of family members in helping diagnose and treat the condition.

Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterised by elevated levels of blood sugar, which over time leads to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves.

More than 420 million people around the globe have diabetes, which is one of the leading causes of death, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
