MPs approved the citizens' plan in a 268-118 vote, with 50 abstentions, on Wednesday evening, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Under the new regulations, the Polish government will spend at least PLN 500 million (EUR 115 million) a year on combating infertility, including through IVF, officials told reporters.

The bill was backed by the liberal Civic Coalition (KO), the Left party and the centre-right Third Way alliance, while the far-right Confederation group voted against, the PAP news agency reported.

The ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party was split on the issue, private broadcaster Polsat News reported.

The bill on state funding for IVF now goes to the Senate, the upper house of Poland's parliament, for consideration.
