Tusk made the remark at a media briefing on Tuesday night, Polish state news agency PAP reported

The new head of government said Grzegorz Braun's actions were "unacceptable" and "must never happen again," adding that they were a "disgrace."

Meanwhile, Shalom Dow Ber Stambler, who heads the Chabad-Lubavitch Orthodox Jewish Hasidic Movement in Poland, said the organisation was "grateful for the solidarity of the entire Polish parliament" in condemning the incident

The US ambassador to Poland, Mark Brzezinski, stated on social media that "this outrageous act must be condemned," the PAP news agency reported.

Writing on the X platform, Brzezinski added: "Poland witnessed firsthand the horrors of the Holocaust and this repulsive act of hatred reminds all why we must be vigilant and fight against antisemitism."

The Confederation group said it "condemns the behaviour" of its MP, adding that it would take "further steps" in the immediate future, the PAP news agency reported.

The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon as Poland's incoming Prime Minister Donald Tusk was answering MPs' questions ahead of a vote of confidence in his Cabinet, the PAP news agency reported.

Braun took an extinguisher and walked across the lobby of the parliament to where the Hanukkah candles were, producing a white cloud, according to footage released by private broadcaster TVN24.

People nearby were covered in powder from the extinguisher as security guards rushed everyone out of the area, news outlets reported.

Braun then took to the parliamentary podium where he described the Hanukkah candles as "Satanic" and declared that he was restoring "normality."

House Speaker Szymon Hołownia excluded Braun from the sitting and said he would notify prosecutors about the incident; the parliamentary board, comprising the Speaker and deputy Speakers, later also imposed a maximum fine on the far-right MP, the PAP news agency reported.

On Monday, Polish President Andrzej Duda sent greetings to members of his country’s Jewish community as it celebrates the holiday of Hanukkah.
