Father Tadeusz Isakowicz-Zaleski, who has died at the age of 67, was one of the most prominent figures in the Polish Catholic Church, known particularly for his uncompromising, anti-communist stance.
A member of the anti-communist opposition under communism, he remained a sometimes controversial figure, in particular for his support for the vetting of priests to check for possible collaboration with communist authorities.
"He was the conscience of the Polish Church":
He was also a writer, a poet, a popular commentator and the head of the Brother Albert Foundation. As a priest his pastoral care included the Catholic-Armenian community and the disabled community.
