Participants in this year's March for Life and Family in the Polish capital called for traditional Christian values to be upheld while opposing same-sex marriages, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Marcin Perłowski, director of the Warsaw-based Centre for Life and Family, the main organizer of the event, said the marchers aimed to "defend the lives of unborn children."

He added that participants "do not agree with attempts to reduce the role of the family" through a proposed new law on civil partnerships, which he said "will lead to equalizing same-sex couples with married couples and enable them to adopt children."

Organizers have previously said that the annual march, which is now in its 19th year, is "a response to the crisis afflicting marriage and family," state news agency PAP reported.

On Saturday, thousands took part in the 23rd Equality Parade in Warsaw under the motto "Freedom and Tolerance for Minorities."
